Metamorphic and Non Metamorphic life cycles

Now we've learned that living animals have life cycles. Let's look at two major differences in life cycles.

Metamorphic and non Metamorphic

What does metamorphic mean?
It comes from the word metamorphosis which means:
Metamorphosis is a process by which animals undergo extreme, rapid physical changes sometime after birth. Metamorphosis may change the animal or insect's entire body, such as a change in the animal's number of legs, its means of eating, or its means of breathing.

What does that mean?

So far we have learnt that living items grow and reproduce, some living animals and insects go through big changes when they grow, for example, a butterfly becomes a larva (caterpillar) and then a pupa (chrysalis) before becoming a butterfly. This is metamorphosis, which is another word for transformation.

Other animals such as tigers, dogs and humans do not transform when they are born, they are born with a similar body shape as the adult and then simply grow larger. These are called non-metamorphic life cycles.
